Thanks for reading For the Birds! These letters are born of my own artistic vision, but they carry the hope of encouraging you in yours. Paid readers gain access to The Resiliency Circle & receive nourishment all month long: prompts, stories, and tools inspired by my work as a creativity mentor and writing coach.
To my paid readers: “Struggling toward an Artist’s Statement” belongs to a larger series. Read part one here, and part two here. Zoom info for February’s gathering of The Resiliency Circle can be found at the end of today’s letter!
Poem written after Mary Oliver
“I love this world, / but not for its answers.”
from “Snowy Night”
I happen to be standing at the window. I happen to be holding a book. I happen to see two bald eagles, their mottled gray feathering uniconic, a sign of youth. I happen to read panther where the author had written partner. I happen to not be as young as I once was. I happen to glimpse a snowflake from the corner of my eye, mistaking it for a bird or a headlight. I happen to think mistakes, their possibility, are everywhere. I happen to feel the smooth surface of an empty desk, though not this one. I happen to feel like snow, the way falling becomes accumulation.
